In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
